MONTEREY PARK, California (Reuters) – The man suspected of fatally shooting 10 people at a Monterey Park, California, community hall during Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday killed himself on Sunday after being surrounded by police police, local authorities said on Sunday.
An assault rifle was found in the vehicle of the assailant, a 72-year-old Asian man named Huu Can Tran, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said. The motive for the attack is not known at this time.
“We want to know, we want to know how something so awful can happen,” Robert Luna said during a press conference.
He said Huu Can Tran turned his gun on himself when police officers approached the white van he was driving in Torrance, located about 34 kilometers from the scene of the shooting, which the suspect had fled Saturday night.
