Russia produces its first nuclear warheads for the Poseidon torpedo
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia has produced the first nuclear charges for the Poseidon torpedoes that will be installed on the Belgorod nuclear submarine, Russian news agency TASS reported on Monday, citing an unidentified defense source.
“The first charges of Poseidon ammunition have been produced, and the Belgorod submarine will receive them in the near future,” TASS reported citing the source.
In a 2018 speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the Poseidon torpedoes as a new type of strategic nuclear weapon, with unlimited range and capable of operating at extreme depths and at a speed far superior to that of submarines or other existing torpedoes.
“They are very quiet, have great maneuverability and are practically indestructible for the enemy. No weapon can counter them in the current world”, said Vladimir Putin.
