WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on individuals and entities believed to be linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in “malicious” cybercrime and ransomware activities.
The sanctions are part of a joint response by multiple US agencies, including the Justice and State Departments, the US Treasury Department said in a statement.
They concern ten people and two entities because of their cyber activities, he added.
Ransomware encrypts victim data, and hackers then demand cryptocurrency payments that can run into the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars to restore access to the files.
