Brazil: Jair Bolsonaro will be operated on his return from the United States according to his doctor

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will undergo bowel surgery upon his return from the United States, his Brazilian doctor said on Wednesday.

Doctor Antonio Macedo told Reuters he expected the operation to take place in February, although Jair Bolsonaro has yet to announce when he will return from Florida, where he has been staying since late 2022.

Jair Bolsonaro has undergone six surgeries since the stabbing he suffered during the 2018 election campaign, including four directly linked to the attack.

He has also been hospitalized multiple times for bowel discomfort or intestinal blockages, including a hospitalization in Florida earlier this year.

Jair Bolsonaro flew to the United States two days before the end of his mandate, thus avoiding the handover ceremony with his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was invested on January 1.
