The Austrian of AG2R-Citroën raised his arms alone on Wednesday at the Courchevel altiport. Yellow jersey, he took advantage of the physical failure of his runner-up to considerably increase his advantage.
Leaving the time trial on Tuesday crushed by the yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), the pretenders to the podium had an opportunity to seize, Wednesday 19 July, in the queen stage towards Courchevel. If Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroën) had the flair for launching into the good breakaway to win this 17th stage ahead of Simon Yates (Jayco Alula) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)the performance of the day is, once again, thanks to the leader of the general classification.
Between Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc and Courchevel on Wednesday, only the motorbike and the car, stuck in the middle of the road on the climb to the Col de la Loze, surrounded by a dense crowd, managed to slow down the impressive Jumbo-Visma leader. Fourth in the day’s stage, the Dane now has a colossal advantage (7’35”) over his runner-up Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who gave up and finished in 22nd position.
Of the French army present among the forwards of the stage, only David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), 5th, finished in the top 10. His teammates, Thibaut Pinot and Valentin Madouas, finished 11th and 13th. Guillaume Martin is 14th.
