After an incredible performance during the 16th stage, Jonas Vingegaard is the big favorite of the Tour. But the day’s climb between Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc and Courchevel, with 5,400 vertical meters, could reserve many surprises.
After Jonas Vingegaard’s crushing victory in the time trial on Tuesday 18 July, more than 1m30 ahead of his rival Tadej Pogačar, many specialists are wondering. We’re talking about a yellow rocket on the Grande Boucle. “The group is still in shock from what happened on Tuesday. Nobody expected such a gap between Vingegaard and Pogačar. It was 10 seconds yesterday, 1 minute and 48 ago this morning”explains the journalist Gregory Naboulet, live from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie). “No one even expected such a gap between the yellow jersey and the rest of the group. Imagine, third is almost nine minutes behind in the general classification. We have to go back to 2001 to see such a gap between first and third. In 2001 it was Lance Armstrong who dominated the Tour de France”.he continues.
Troubled sprinters
However, Grégory Naboulet assures him, the Tour is not over. “You understood, today is the queen stage. 5,400m of altitude difference, five climbs and, therefore, this passage above 2,000m feared by many of the riders we met this morning.concludes.
