Everywhere in France, sewing bars allow you to mend and create your own clothes. But these cafes like no other are also great places for sharing where all generations meet.
Open six days a week in the city center of Auch (Gers), a bar like no other is always full. Here we get to assemble, cut and weave ties at seven euros an hour, including the advice of the boss. Clients can arrive unexpectedly, with or without a project to implement. “I find it much less intimidating than a sewing class because the place is cozy and the great thing is that we all interact with each other. “, testifies Constance Macé, a customer.
Boys do it too
The sewing machines are self-service, but Pauline Delbaere, the manager, is never far away to help with running them. “I learned to sew in a sewing café in Lille and that’s exactly what I liked when I went there: meeting people and then exchanging but not only about sewing”, confides the owner of this sewing bar. Contrary to popular belief, even young people are starting to take an interest in it.
