The Tour de France 2023 could have been written on the afternoon of Tuesday 18 July, during the race against time on the roads of Haute-Savoie. Jonas Vingegaard is only ten seconds ahead of Tadej Pogačar. Their stratospheric performance impresses and raises questions.

Everyone expected a duel – it was a lesson. Jonas Vingegaard sent the clock into a panic with an average of 41.2 km/h. A performance that the Dane himself finds hard to believe: “I thought my sensor was broken”, he confided. Ten seconds separated him from Tadej Pogačar on the morning of Tuesday 18 July. The public still believes in the duel of the titans.

Broken records

The two riders also broke some records. Never before had the Tourmalet vineyard been built so quickly as this year, with Vingegaard ahead of Pogačar. It was the opposite at the Grand Colombier pass, 17 km of ascent at an average of 23.5 km/h for the Slovenian. Domain that raises questions: some ascent records belong to Lance Armstrong and his generation. But the two cyclists don’t shy away from the topic. On Wednesday 19 July, at an altitude of 2,300 m on the Col de la Loze, new records could fall.
