Italy crushes Argentina in the endgame

Video duration: 5 minutes.

Dominatrix, Italy waited for the last minutes of the match to dominate Argentina (1-0) on Monday.

Argentina ended up folding. The sturdy South Americans held on for 87 minutes before succumbing to Italy (1-0) on Monday 24 July, for the sides’ first match at this World Cup. The Squadra Azzurra largely dominated the match, logically having two goals canceled in the first half for offside. Cristiana Girelli, as soon as she entered, made the difference in the 87th minute. The transalpines return to Sweden, winners also on Sunday’s arrival of South Africa, at the head of group G.

It wasn’t their first World Cup victory yet, but Argentina held on for a long time. Aggressive in defense if not dangerous with the ball, German Portanova’s players knew how to be disciplined at the right moment. Arianna Caruso (15th), then Valentina Giacinti (42nd) had their goals disallowed for offside, the fault of a suitably placed Argentine block. But in physical difficulty in the second period, they weren’t able to go far. And Girelli got up to score the only goal of the match (87th) with a nice lobed header.

The Argentines could have landed a heavy blow in stoppage time from one of their rare attempts on goal, a powerful free-kick from Florencia Bonsegundo (90+4th) well cleared by Italian goalkeeper Francesca Durante. Too little too late. Italy will face Sweden on Saturday (9.30am, on France 2 and to the shock of the leaders of this group G.
