Ghana says goodbye to Atsu, a national player who died in Turkey

A farewell ceremony was held in Accra for the national footballer and Turkish “Hatayspor” Christian Atsu, who died following the devastating earthquake in Turkey

The farewell ceremony took place at the Accra State Palace, visited by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo. Other dignitaries and former teammates of the footballer were also present.

Atsu’s funeral will take place in his hometown of Ada, Ghana. During his career, 31-year-old Atsu played for the Portuguese “Porto” and “Rio Ave”, the English “Chelsea”, “Everton”, “Bournemouth” and “Newcastle”, the Dutch “Vitesse”, the Spanish ” Malaga “, the Saudi Al-Raed. As part of the Ghana national team, he played 60 matches in which he scored 10 goals.

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey on February 6. A few hours later, another push followed with a strength of 7.6 points. Atsu’s body was recovered from the wreckage on February 18. According to the latest data, the death toll in Turkey has passed the 49,000 mark.
