AS Monaco will face PSV Eindhoven in the third qualifying round

AS Monaco now knows the identity of the first opponent of its qualifying campaign for the 2022-2023 edition of the Champions League. In the draw which took place on Monday July 18 at the home of European football in Nyon, Switzerland, the Monegasques inherited PSV Eindhoven for the third preliminary round. Philippe Clement’s players will play second in the Dutch championship on August 2 or 3 on the way to Louis-II, then on August 9 on the return to the Netherlands, to try to access the jump-offs of the competition.

Third in the last French Ligue 1 championship just behind PSG and OM, the Rocher club could expect to face a big fish. By virtue of its UEFA coefficient, ASM was deprived of the seeded hat, which complicated its task in this draw.

But among the teams that Monaco could have drawn (Sporting Lisbon, Rangers or the winner of the Fenerbaçe-Dynamo Kyev match), the Monegasques finally inherit the club which had the worst European course last season. The PSV players had indeed stopped in the quarter-finals of the Europa League conference (third level of the European cups), eliminated by Leicester. The Principality club already faced PSV last year in the group stage of the Europa League, winning in the Netherlands (2-1) before drawing (0-0) at Louis II. The Monegasques will find a former member of their club, the Brazilian Carlos Vinicius, and the former Parisian Xavi Simons, who arrived this summer in the Dutch club.
