The US says it does not support Ukrainian attacks on Russia
After saboteurs invaded the Belgorod region, the White House once again informed the Ukrainian authorities that the United States did not support attacks on Russian territory.
“We have once again made it clear to the Ukrainians that we do not want to encourage or facilitate this [нападениям на Россию]We certainly don’t want any U.S. equipment to be used to attack Russian territory,” said White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.
According to him, Washington received assurances from Kiev that it would “respect these wishes.” “We have made it clear that we want Ukraine to be able to defend its land, its territory. They were attacked. They’ve been attacked. They have the right to self-defense,” Kirby said.
At the same time, he added that the United States does not want this war to escalate into something more and lead to even more destruction and violence. Kirby also clarified that the talks with Ukraine about the attacks on Russia did not involve “outlining the consequences” but were “merely an acknowledgment” that the parties understood each other. The discussion of this took place “very recently, literally on the last day,” a White House spokesman said.
Kirby’s statement came days after Ukrainian saboteurs invaded the Belgorod region. The group penetrated the Grayvoronsky urban district in the Belgorod region on May 22. The attack began around 6 am with shelling, after which infantry in armored vehicles entered Russia. The saboteurs entered the city of Grayvoron, the villages of Kozinka, Glotovo and Gora-Podol. The anti-terrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced to fight the armed formation in the region.
According to New York At one time, saboteurs used at least three American-made armored personnel carriers, two of which were captured by Russian forces. Specifically, they traveled in military Humvee off-road vehicles and in MaxxPro armored cars MRAP.
In addition, according to NYT, the Armed Forces of Ukraine provided them with support and protected the border with Ukraine. The Russian Freedom Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), which includes Russians fighting on the side of Ukraine, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that during the fighting with saboteurs, the Russian military destroyed four armored combat vehicles and five pickup trucks, and killed 70 people. Subsequently, the CTO regime in the Belgorod region was canceled.
According to the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, a resident of the border village of Kozinka was killed as a result of the fighting with the saboteurs, and 12 civilians were injured. Residents of nine settlements in the Grayvoron district, which borders Ukraine, have been “virtually displaced”. In addition, at least 500 homes were damaged, said Grayvoron district chief Gennady Bondarev.
The Kremlin attributed the attack on the Belgorod region to an attempt by Kiev to divert attention from Bakhmut’s capture, which the Ministry of Defense announced on May 21. Mikhail Podoliak, adviser to the head of the Chancellery of the President of Ukraine, said that Kiev is “observing the events in the Belgorod region and investigating the situation, but has nothing to do with it.”
