The oldest denim chain closes business in Russia

The American denim store Westland is going to stop working in Russia. Kommersant writes about this, citing two sources in the retail real estate market.

On the hotline of the store itself, the publication was confirmed that the network is selling the remaining goods and is gradually closing. New products of the brand are not going to be imported to Russia yet, the employee said. The Westland online store has not been accepting orders since last fall.

The Westland brand appeared in Russia in 1994. He specializes in selling men’s and women’s denim clothing. The brand has both its own stores and franchised ones.

In Russia, the Westland trademark is owned by businessman Mikhail Mendoza-Blandon, according to Rospatent. He also acts as the head of the Russian network.

In recent years, the Westland network in Russia has been greatly reduced. If in 2020 about 55 own stores operated under the brand in large cities of Russia, now only nine outlets are open in Moscow, the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk and Omsk, according to the company’s website.

Westland sells its own stores at a significant discount, says one of Kommersant’s interlocutors.

The network could reduce stores due to accumulated debts, says Marina Malakhatko, head of the CORE.XP retail department. According to her, in 30 years Westland could lose some of its customers.

In addition, due to the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and sanctions, in 2022, consumer spending fell sharply. Sales of non-food products fell by more than 10% for six consecutive months. In November, according to Rosstat, the indicator fell by 11.7% year-on-year.

As a result, shopping centers experienced problems with attendance: in the largest shopping centers with an area of more than 80 thousand square meters, it fell by 25% year-on-year in 10 months. In malls with an area of 40,000 to 80,000 square meters, attendance decreased by 7% year-on-year.

Earlier, another American denim brand Levi’s left the Russian market. Several of his stores in Russia have changed their name to JNS.

And on the eve it became known about the departure from Russia of the American brand of clothing and accessories Michael Kors. The company refused to supply goods to the country.
