One of the largest owners of Russian shopping centers will build a spaceport

Crocus Group of Araz Agalarov, which owns Russia’s largest trade and exhibition and business center Crocus City, will build a technical complex for the Angara rocket at the Vostochny cosmodrome. The construction contract worth 15.38 billion rubles was signed on December 28, 2022, RBC reports. The company is also gasifying the cosmodrome — for this, a separate contract worth 907 million rubles has been signed.

Сrocus Group was chosen as the general contractor due to the fact that the company already has construction capacities and competencies at the cosmodrome, Roscosmos explained. At the end of 2020, the directorate of the cosmodrome also signed a contract with Crocus Group for the construction of the first stage of the airport at the cosmodrome for 28 billion rubles without a tender. “We are specialists in swamp construction, because stadiums [для чемпионата мира по футболу] stood in the swamps, “Crocus Expo” – too. Another swamp we got into is the airport for the cosmodrome, ”said Agalarov. With a proposal to build an airport, the ex-head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, personally approached him.

In 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov, who then replaced Rogozin as head of Roskosmos, has already proposed to the Crocus Group to start building a spaceport. Agalarov refused, citing the fact that The money allocated for the project is not enough.

“The construction of the Vostochny cosmodrome, the launch complex for the heavy Angara rocket was discussed. I don’t remember what the estimate was. But then I calculated what the cost of concrete, the complexity of the work being done, what salaries [у строителей], and said that this money, which is provided for in the contract, is simply not enough. And I refused,” Agalarov said.

The complex that the company agreed to build, should be ready by the end of 2025. The total area of the facilities will be 50,000 square meters. m.
