Navalny faces another 30 years in prison in new “extremism” case.
The oppositionist Alexei Navalny, who is already serving a nine-year sentence in the colony, faces another sentence – another 30 years. A new case against a politician appeared in the files of the Moscow City Court.
According to court data, Navalny will be charged under seven articles. In addition to the expected case for the creation of an extremist community (part 3 of article 282 § 1 of the penal code), the politician will be accused of rehabilitation of Nazism (part 3 of article 354 paragraph 1), financing of extremist activities (part 2 of article 282.3), public calls for extremist activities (part 1 and 2 of article 280) and involving minors in unlawful acts (part 2 of article 151.2).
In addition, another defendant in the case is the former technical director of the Navalny LIVE channel, Daniel Cholodny, who is currently in prison.
The case was registered on May 25, the date of its consideration has not yet been set. Judge Navalny was Andrei Suvorov, who sentenced American Paul Whelan to 16 years on charges of espionage, Norwegian Frode Berg to 14 years and former Inter RAO board member Karina Tsurkan to 15 years.
A criminal case against Navalny on the basis of an article on extremism was launched last year. In October, the politician said that the Investigative Committee accused him of promoting terrorism and extremism, financing extremist activities and rehabilitating Nazism. “Lawyers have recognized this, given the timing of the publication of these articles, for a total of 30 years,” Navalny’s Instagram account reads.
The politician was detained in January 2021 after returning from Germany, where he was treated after being poisoned with Novichok. In February, the court changed the 3.5-year probation period he was sentenced to in 2014 to a real one in a penal colony. In March last year, the court found the politician guilty of another crime and sentenced him to nine years in a strict regime colony.
In the summer, Navalny was transferred to correctional colony No. 6 in the Vladimir region, where he is currently staying. During his detention, the oppositionist spent over 150 days in a penal cell.
