Mass checks of draft evaders began in Moscow

The Investigative Committee began checking conscripts who evade military service. According to the telegram channel Baza, On January 17 alone, five such inspections were registered in one of the districts of Moscow.

Investigators are interested in young people who received summons during the spring and autumn conscription for military service, but did not appear at the military registration and enlistment offices and did not provide documents in their defense. The check is carried out according to the 328th article of the Criminal Code on evasion from service. The maximum penalty for it is up to two years in prison.

Previously it was reported that after the spring conscription, which took place against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, 410 criminal cases of evasion from service were submitted to the courts. This number has become a record for the last 10 years. One of these cases was considered on 13 January. His defendant, a resident of the Ryazan region Nikita Praslov, was fined 50 thousand rubles.

December 31 Ministry of Defense reported on the end of the autumn call: 120 thousand people went to the army, according to the decree of President Vladimir Putin. Human rights activists noted that the campaign was held with numerous violations. The conscripts were rounded up with the involvement of criminal investigation officers. Raids were carried out everywhere, including in hostels, subways, coffee shops and student dormitories.

At the end of December, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu proposed to increase the size of the armed forces by 350 thousand people (up to 1.5 million) and raise the lower age of conscription from 18 to 21 years, and the maximum from 27 to 30 years. He also called for the opportunity to conclude a contract from the first day of joining the army.

At the same time, Andrei Kartapolov, head of the State Duma Committee on Defense, said that men under 30 years old would be called up to the military registration and enlistment offices already in the spring draft of 2023, and as a result of the “reform”, the total number of recruits could increase by more than a third.
