Two people died and five were injured in the crash of an An-2 plane in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the plane with 10 passengers and two crew members crashed 10 kilometers from the village of Karatayka.
The victims were a pilot and a passenger, a source told Life. Five people were injured. Rescuers on snowmobiles and a helicopter left for the scene.
“Two Mi-8 helicopters with medics and rescuers on board are getting ready to take off. Karatayka is far from Naryan-Mar, it takes two to two and a half hours to fly,” the press service of the district administration explained.
The accident was reported by one of the passengers, able to reach emergency services. A TASS source cites icing on the plane as the cause of the crash. The victims described the landing as “very hard”.
“We don’t know yet what happened, the emergency radio beacon went off. We have a polar night, fog. Ground crews left to provide assistance,” said Valery Ostapchuk, general director of the Naryan-Mar United Air Squad. Due to poor visibility, the crew decided to go to an alternate runway in the village of Varandey.
