Britain, following France, thought about the transfer of tanks to Ukraine

British authorities are discussing the possibility of transferring a batch of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine for the first time. According to a source familiar with Sky News, negotiations have been going on for several weeks.

According to the interlocutor of the channel, such a move would be a sign of significantly increased support for Ukraine and could encourage other NATO members, in particular Germany, to follow the example of London.

Another Sky News source suggested that the UK could offer around 10 Challenger 2 tanks. This would not be a game changer in itself, but would still make a huge difference as the move would break the unspoken rule about the supply of armored vehicles that it would be seen as excessive. escalation from Russia.

“This will be a good precedent to demonstrate to others – primarily Germany with their Leopards and the United States with Abrams,” a Ukrainian source said.

In early January, the office of French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the country would supply Ukraine with AMX-10 RC wheeled tanks, as well as Bastion armored personnel carriers. Then U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed that the Pentagon will send Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, as well as other equipment, to Kyiv to prepare the Ukrainian army for the escalation of hostilities in the spring.

A number of Western governments have expressed their readiness to transfer the German Leopard 2 tanks, which are in their arsenal, to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Chairman of the Parliamentary Defense Committee Antti Hakkanen noted that Finland is ready to provide these tanks to Ukraine if the rest of the EU countries join such a program. Poland is also considering transferring Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Now the country has more than 240 of these armored vehicles, which is enough for two brigades.

However, no country has the right to transfer Leopard 2 tanks without the permission of the country of origin – Germany. The transfer of modern tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Berlin has been discussed since the spring of last year.
