An icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker handed over to the airbase in Engels, which came under shelling from Ukraine

After a series of attacks by Ukrainian drones on the air base in Engels, the Great Icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was handed over to its leadership.

The ceremony of handing over the icon took place in Saratov in the Church of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky in the Victory Park on Sokolovaya Gora, writes the Saratov edition “Region 64”. She was handed over to the leadership of the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division.

The icon will raise the morale of the soldiers of the “legendary” Engels Air Base, said Vitaly Shustov, Deputy Minister for Internal Policy of the Saratov Region.

The top leadership of the Engels Air Base, a representative of the Saratov diocese, Father Vladimir Novikov, and others also took part in the ceremony.

The airfield in Engels is located in the Saratov region, about 700 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. Regular strikes of strategic aviation on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine are delivered from it. Since autumn, Russia has launched more than ten massive airstrikes on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

Despite the rather large distance from the front, the air base has already been attacked by Ukrainian drones three times. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities have not officially confirmed their involvement in the attacks.

After the second attack, Russia evacuated strategic bombers from the airfield in Engels, said in the daily report of the British Ministry of Defense with reference to the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov. Russia has moved Tu-95MS long-range heavy bombers and Tu-22M3 medium bombers to the Far East, the report said.

Earlier, Yuri Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, spoke about this. And in the telegram channel Realnaya Voina they wrote that Russia had transferred from 4 to 6 Tu-95 strategic bombers to the Ukrainka airfield in the Amur region.

However, Russian aircraft and will continue to be able to strike with cruise missiles in Ukraine – they are capable of hitting objects at a distance of 5,000 kilometers, according to a report from the Ministry of Defense. However, flying aircraft from different locations will complicate their maintenance, according to a British intelligence report.

In early December, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit the airfield in Engels with a Soviet Tu-141 Strizh drone. As a result of the strike, three servicemen were killed and two aircraft were damaged. This is the first time Ukraine has attacked military installations in Russia so far from the front line.

And on December 26, the Armed Forces of Ukraine again attacked the military airfield. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, air defense systems shot down a Ukrainian drone on approach to the Engels military airfield. Three soldiers were killed by falling debris from a drone.

For the third time, a Ukrainian drone flew to the air base in Engels on December 29 in response to the tenth massive shelling from Russia. He was shot down by air defense.
