Toulouse Academy: why the job of teacher is no longer a dream

the essential
The fall in the number of candidates for national education competitions proves the growing disinterest of students in the teaching profession, which is poorly paid and devalued.

Is the teaching profession still a dream? When we look at the number of candidates for the competitions this year, we can legitimately doubt it. Supporting evidence with the latest eligibility results for the 2022 session, published on May 10: only 816 mathematics teachers admitted to the certificate of aptitude for secondary education teaching (Capes), while 1035 positions are to be filled in September.

One hundred unfilled positions

The majority union of the second degree (college and high school) Snes-FSU is sounding the alarm, even though the new Minister of National Education Pap Ndiaye promises a salary of 2000 euros net for future teachers at the start of their career.

“At the external Capes of mathematics, analyzes the union, it is twice less admitted than in 2021, whereas that year, 100 positions had not been filled. Hundreds of math teacher positions will not be filled in 2022. It is to be feared that they will be definitively lost”.

Perhaps not if the complementary lists were maintained. This is also what the Snes-FSU is calling for, in particular “the systematization of these additional lists, from which the ministry could draw candidates that it has not been able to recruit elsewhere”. Mathematics is not the only discipline threatened by shortages.

83 eligible for 215 positions

“In the external German capes, there are only 83 eligible for 215 positions and in the internal competition, there were 34 eligible and only 29 admitted for 35 positions, notes the Snes. This year more than a hundred positions will be lost in German, a discipline already accustomed to the loss of positions in previous years”. The secondary school union fears, moreover, to make a similar observation concerning the capes of modern or classic letters, living languages, physics and chemistry.

The first degree is not spared by this lack of interest in the teaching profession which affects many students. Not to mention the aberrations of the system. This is evidenced by the case of Simon (the first name has been changed), from Toulouse but who passed the school teaching competition in the Versailles Academy, who was “passed, but I can’t teach because I don’t have had my Master’s by a few points, it’s incomprehensible”.

A pool of replacements

In the absence of eligible candidates, contract workers are hired, to the chagrin of the teachers’ unions, which constantly demand the hiring of teachers who have passed the academic competition.

Wednesday, July 6, at the rectorate, the academic director of the national education services (Dasen) of Haute-Garonne Mathieu Sieye and inspectors will receive, all day, candidates for teaching positions in schools “in order to build up a pool of replacements” for next year.

The funny “job dating” of teachers’ unions

To thwart the recruitment projects of the rectorate of Toulouse, which receives, Wednesday, July 6, a hundred candidates who apply for a teaching post in the schools of Haute-Garonne, the teachers’ unions organize their own job dating. The Haute-Garonne inter-union, FSU-Snuipp and CGT Educ’action, propose to hire contract workers of a new kind: “a minister, a rector, a Dasen and inspectors of National Education (IEN) for the start of the 2022 school year”. A way to make fun of the recruitment day organized by the academic inspection. “Index point frozen for more than ten years, salaries among the lowest in the whole of the European Union, degraded working conditions, teacher bashing in the media: everything has been organized for years so that the profession no longer attracts and to promote the use of contract workers”, denounce the unions.
